How it all began!

My name is Ben Massucco and I am the owner of HG Garage. My passion for dirt bikes started when I was about 10 years old, and building this company has been my dream every day since then.

As a kid, my parents were hesitant to get me a dirt bike when I first hinted at the idea, but they eventually broke down and allowed me to purchase a 5hp minibike off eBay. This little doodlebug 30 minibike held me over for a couple years as I spent every waking moment riding it in my yard and admiring it in my garage.

Finally, I found a Yamaha PW80 for $350 about 3 hours away when I realized the 5hp motor wasn’t cutting it anymore. I saved up $315 over the course of 2 years and my dad agreed to lend me the $35 I needed and drove me to buy the bike. If I had known then what I know now, after taking one look at the bike I would have jumped right back in the car. I had forked over my life savings into a bike that was blown up.

The bike sat for several months as I did as many chores as possible to earn some money to fix it. My dad and I decided to do the labor to install the new top end ourselves. Neither of us had any experience with dirt bike motors, but luckily, my dad is an engineer and has exceptional mechanical skills. I discovered online dirt bike forums and “how to” videos on YouTube along the way, and with my newfound internet knowledge, I rebuilt the pw80 with the help of my dad and it fired right up and ran for many years. And so it began.

Over the next few years, I bought and sold several bikes, but it wasn’t until I went to college in Colorado that I realized I could turn this passion into a side hustle at a time when I desperately needed the extra cash. The $1,000 dollars I had from my college loan disbursement that was supposed to go towards my rent, ended up being spent on 2 motorcycles I had hoped I could flip and make a profit.

Off the heels of that success, I began to buy and sell a couple bikes a month, working in between classes and every weekend until I graduated. There were countless times I ran into issues, ran out of money, or wanted to give up, but I stayed because I loved it. It provided me hours of much needed relaxation and served as an outlet for me to express my creativity.

As time went on, I could not find the parts I needed and had bikes torn apart for months while I searched for the exact part I was looking for. I would scour eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace since most of the parts I needed were discontinued. This gave me the idea to start HG Garage.

I know there are many other people like me working on or rebuilding bikes who just cannot find the parts they need to finish the job. HG Garage was designed to help people like me and all the people in the moto community.

The name, Homegrown Garage, LLC, was created with the DIY spirit in mind. The HG Garage brand represents following your dreams and not letting humble beginnings restrict your growth. Our goal is to have the largest used dirt bike parts selection in the world so that our customers can quickly and easily get the part they need, when they need it. I’m proud to say we are well on our way.
